Pennsylvania Railroad MO Tower, LASERkit, HO Scale, Part 1

This is the second of two kits I had agreed to build a long time ago. So let's get started. It's from the same maker as the 50,000 gallon water tank, American Model Builders, which sadly went defunct earlier this year.

Nice presentation. I built the water tower first, because I thought it would be easier. Ha!

All the laser cut parts, many have adhesive backing already on them. Looks intimidating, that is why I thought this one would be much harder.

Seventeen pages of dense no one will ever read instructions, printed on both sides. Narrative style instructions.

Detail drawing of the structure.

First thing is to get through the instructions and get a sense of how I will build this thing. After that, sort the parts into color groups to paint. I will be building the version on the box top using Pennsylvania RR colors, "Caboose Red", "Roof Brown", and "SP Armor Yellow." I don't have standard RR colors, so found matches using Tamiya and Mr. Color paints.

While painting, I try not to muddle up the process by trying to think too much, so I sort the parts into color groups.

My painting process. I start with the lightest colors first. I opted against brush painting so the finish would be even, allow the wood to show through a bit, and make it less likely that thick paint would warp the parts.

The colors and finish.

All the edges needed to be painted using a brush.

Next, I assembled the base plate using screws so it could be taken apart.

The main walls of the structure were reinforced with balsa corner blocks. I used machinists blocks with 90 degree angles as fixtures to make sure the corners dried true.

I painted the inside black, so you won't see distracting construction details though the windows.

That's it for now...more soon.
